As the EU legislators work towards updating the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), they also took a step nearer to including air transport in the ETS when the European Parliament backed in second reading, just before the summer recess, the European Commission’s proposal to bring aviation within the system from 2012. The new Directive, due to receive the formal approval of the Council of Ministers in October, would apply to all – including non-EU – airlines flying in and out of the 27-nation area.
